Applications open for new students to drone and data course at ADDA

The African Drone and Data Academy in Malawi is now open for new applications for the sixth intake for its Certificate for Drone and Data Technology (CDDT) Level 1.

Offering drone technology courses in conjunction with Virginia Tech, the UNICEF-backed academy in Malawi has been identified as one of the top drone technology training schools in the world by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), after first opening its doors to students only a little over than a year ago in January 2020.

And it should be true too; because AUVSI is the world’s largest non-profit organisation dedicated to the advancement of unmanned systems and robotics and represents corporations and professionals from more than 60 countries, with a significant part to play in the industrial, government and academic aspects of drone technology applications. They are strictly forbidden to embellish facts.

The first cohort of students started lessons in April last year, and spent five weeks at the institutions; the first three of which had a heavy bias towards drone data analysis – GIS fundamentals, data types and co-ordinate systems, multispectral sensing, introduction to computer vision and machine learning, advanced spatial analysis methods, data ethics, among related modules.

Different mapping applications like agriculture, disease control, emergency response, flood modelling, infrastructure management were also covered.

In the last two weeks, students would dive into unmanned aerial systems proper; flight physics, aircraft performance, propulsion systems, aerostructures, payloads, flight operations and wireless communications. Students also took part in entrepreneurship and innovation workshop to equip them with enough knowledge and courage to start their own businesses in the drone and data industry.

Scheduled to run from the 26th of April until the 28th of May this year, the course is open for citizens of African countries, preferably aged between eighteen and twenty-four.

The deadline for application is midnight on Friday, March 19, 2021, so get cracking. And having just celebrated International Women’s Day a few days ago, women are strongly encouraged to apply
