Lights out, and its lift off for DJI and Mercedes Benz

Commercial drone maker DJI has officially joined motorsport – and they are racing in Mercedes Benz’s corner.

The world-renowned manufacturer of commercial and enterprise drones will supply the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team with latest aerial imagery and creative camera technology to bring racing fans closer to the action on and off the track.

Formula E is a motorsport championship, the Formula 1 of electric cars. Now in its seventh season, the championship has twelve teams with two drivers from each team fighting for the title. Mercedes Benz are something of a newbie in the electric motorsport business, having joined party in the 2019/20 season, after taking over from HWA Racelab.

Team Principal Ian James said they joined hands with DJI because the latter satisfied Mercedes Benz’s quest to continually find innovative ways to bring fans closer to the team. The Mercedes-Benz team, will be using a wide range of DJI’s aerial and handheld products to bring fans closer to the action through digital content both on and off the track, to bring creative content and storytelling into Formula E racing.

“In our conversations with DJI, we soon discovered that we share the same values,” said James. “DJI is constantly striving to develop new ideas for their technologies in order to extend the boundaries of what is technically feasible. That’s exactly what we do in Formula E. The series has become a pioneer of technological innovation, sustainability and electric mobility. We’re looking forward to working with DJI and to being able to deploy their advanced technologies and creative expertise in the Formula E environment.”

Mercedes Benz started deploying DJI products such as the DJI Action camera at this year’s Mexico City E-Prix. DJI says the multiple camera modes of the its action camera provide versatility to the user and the durable, robust design allows the capture of smooth 4k footage in some of the most challenging technical environments.

Basile David, Head of Partnerships at DJI said his organisation was excited at the prospect of working with Mercedes Benz, and being part of an exciting sport.

“The shared values of the two brands – driving change and progress through innovation and the pursuit for excellence through collaboration – will enable us to take creative storytelling to new heights, and bring a new and immersive viewing experience for motorsports fans around the world,” said David.

“The footage captured from DJI’s drone and handheld camera technology will enable a new and immersive viewing experience for fans of the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team as well as motorsports enthusiasts around the world.”
