Drone Chick on the convenience of drone technology
In June this year, we attended the Drone & Unmanned Aviation Conference, South Africa’s flagship drone event where stakeholders in the country’s commercial drone space meet annually compare notes on the pace of the industry’s growth.
We worked with conference sponsor, drone insurance services provider, iTOO Special Risks, to pick the minds of the top voices in South Africa when it comes to commercial drone applications.
The interviews ranged from industry growth, potential, the current state of the drone space as well as the future of drone technology operations in South Africa.
Up next in the interview series is Kim James, the Drone Chick of Africa who left the safety net of a settled career in Human Resources to wade into the uncharted waters of drone service provision in the South African security industry in 2018.
Since then, Kim and her partner Bertus van Zyl’s company has grown from strength to strength, becoming one of the household names in as far as drone security is concerned.
Recently, the company open a training wing, which goes beyond just offering trainees a pilot certificate; but also offers in-depth training in data collection, especially in the areas of aerial surveillance and unmanned aerial security operations.
Kim herself has been instrumental in the advancement of commercial drone technology in South Africa; joining hands with other women to form the Africa chapter of Women and Drones; getting many a young female drone technology hopeful into training and helping with internship placements.
On the same vein, she has also helped in the advancement of drone industry opportunities for people living with disabilities, is a member of local drone technology lobby associations; and has shared insights in the four editions of the Amazon bestselling Drone Professional books.
She spoke about these and various other issues pertaining to the South African drone space; and she has some really interesting viewpoints.
