Ethiopian federal police invest in drone tech

The Ethiopian Federal Police is entering a new era with the integration of drone technology that would boost its policing operations in the country’s urban areas and borders.

The police organisation also opened an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Simulation Training Centre; to help cops familiarise themselves with the working of drones in policing activities.

Federal police Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael said the newly acquired drones will be deployed to fight against smuggling and the prevention of illegal human trafficking, as quoted by the Addis Standard agency.

Gebremichael added that the drones will support the police in crime prevention, surveillance, and investigation operations.

“By integrating and coordinating foot patrol units with drone patrols in major cities such as Addis Ababa, the ability to combat crime has been enhanced,” Gebremichael said.

“This approach, backed by modern technology, enables the police to address challenges more efficiently and respond to emergencies in an organised and robust manner.”

“This Drone Technology Centre is not just about acquiring sophisticated equipment; it’s about investing in our young police officers and equipping them with the skills to leverage technology for the greater good.

“By providing this intensive training, we are ensuring our force can effectively utilize these tools to protect our citizens and safeguard our nation,” the police chief added.
