It was the biggest match of Fleetwood Town’s existence ever – reigning Premier League champions were at Highbury (no, not THAT Highbury; the Fleetwood Highbury) for a league cup match against Fleetwood Town's Cod Army – so, of course a lunatic had to fly his drone above the stadium and force play to stop for seven minutes.
The London club ended up losing the match 5-3 on penalties after the match had ended one-all; but we are really salty fans and we blame that drone for the loss.
The match was only about three minutes old, when the Gunners won a free kick on the left edge of the hosts’ box, when referee Michael Salisbury suddenly stopped play, after he looked up and noticed blinking red and greenlights hovering above the stadium.
The drone was not recognised by home club Fleetwood, and for safety reasons, the referee had to stop play to discuss the situation with the ground safety officer and both clubs’ managers.
After some time, Salisbury took the decision to call all 22 players off the pitch in the eighth minute, although it was that exact time that the drone operator then appeared to fly away from the pitch.
With fans getting agitated in the stands, the police were also called in to help, and before long, it was reported that the operator of the drone had been identified and dealt with.
The match resumed in the 11th minute. Around 10 minutes later, Aaron Loupalo-Bi fired Fleetwood in front against the Premier League champions.
The Gunner’s response came in the second half, and they then went on to miss chance after chance, with new signing Bruno Guimaraes completing the foul night when he missed his penalty to see his side getting knocked out of this year’s competition.
