Medical drone logistics for Zimbabwe

Medical drone logistics for Zimbabwe

A Zimbabwean drone services provider has broken through the ceiling, announcing the launch of the first ever medical delivery by drone service in the country.

Harare-based Drone Solutions Zimbabwe – which previously offered drone services to industries that included agriculture, public safety, inspection, geospatial, construction and mining – has said it will be expanding its services into drone delivery.

The company is currently conducting feasibility tests with the government’s health ministry – with Kite Aero coming in as the drone partner - and carried out demonstrations at Chitungwiza Genera Hospital.

“The days when geography dictated the quality of healthcare are coming to an end,” the company said in a statement.

“Drone Solutions has officially launched a pioneering drone delivery initiative designed to reach Zimbabwe’s most remote locations.

“By creating a high-tech aerial bridge, this initiative ensures that life-saving supplies are no longer held back by inaccessible roads or seasonal flooding.”

Zimbabwe has a poor rural road network, and it gets worse during the rainy season. This has in turn severely affected the country’s healthcare system, with drug shortages affecting small health facilities that serve rural communities.

And Drone Solutions hopes to fill that gap by introducing a medical drone logistics service that would transport drugs and other medical supplies to these communities with the lower skies convenience offered by drone technology.

Zimbabwe would be the latest country in Southern Africa to explore drone technology in healthcare delivery, following on the footsteps of Mozambique, Botswana, Madagascar, the DRC and Malawi; which is the playground for everything drone in the region – what with the Africa Drone and Data Academy as well as the Drone Corridor calling the country home.

As explained by the company; “The heart of this mission is clinical precision. Drone Solutions will be deploying a fleet specifically engineered to handle the most urgent medical needs, including:

  • The Cold Chain Challenge: Drones are now transporting vaccines, blood products, and pathology samples in strictly controlled environments ($2-8^{circ}C$), ensuring zero spoilage.
  • Rapid Interventions: Critical medications, such as anti-rabies vaccines and emergency maternal health drugs, can now reach their destination in under 30 minutes—a fraction of the time required for traditional road journeys.
  • Bypassing Obstacles: By flying over geographical barriers, the efficiency of the national healthcare system is expected to increase by over 90 percent in targeted regions.”

Going forward, the company plans to expand into the region, with initial plans set for Malawi, Mozambique, and the DRC. It reckons that, by integrating these markets under a single operational standard, the impact of aerial logistics will scale across Sub-Saharan Africa.

“This network already serves millions of people, leveraging thousands of flight kilometers to deliver anti-venom, pathology samples, and essential vaccinations to those who need them most.

“Drone Solutions is calling upon government bodies, private sector players, and global health funders to partner in this technological leap forward. By combining cutting-edge innovation with a bold regional expansion, Drone Solutions is committed to ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their location, has access to the critical supplies they need in record time.”
