Of course, drones being good at what they do and all, the temptation for using them for nefarious means is too great for criminals to ignore.
Like these four men from Manchester, who have just been arrested after a drone 'bound for prison' was seized in Salford. Officers from Greater Manchester Police's Specialist Operations unit stopped a vehicle in the Blackfriars area, near the city centre in Manchester, shortly before midnight on April 6.
The four suspects, aged between 24 and 34, were detained and the vehicle was searched. Police discovered a drone alongside other items inside.
All four men were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to convey prohibited articles into a prison. They remain in custody for questioning this afternoon (Wednesday).
“These arrests mark another important step in our wider efforts to tackle organised crime at its roots and make our streets safer,” said Detective Sergeant Carla Dalton, of GMP’s City of Manchester North Challenger and Prison Team.
“Criminal networks often attempt to use prisons and drones to co‑ordinate serious offences, including drug supply, violence and exploitation.
"Our officers are determined to prevent this and ensure those responsible are identified, disrupted and brought to justice. We will continue working closely with prisons across Greater Manchester to protect our communities and will take robust action against anyone who seeks to undermine public safety.”
Drones have been the go to transport of choice for smuggling contraband into prison facilities, with several of them have been intercepted in the UK alone, and in Greece, as well as the USA.
