DJI, the world’s biggest drone manufacturer is in the news for different reasons this time, as reports from China have it that the company’s former VP of Sales has been arrested on bribery allegations.
The company executive, who has only been identified by the surname of Yuan at this time, is said to have served as a vice president at DJI between May 2019 and May 2024, overseeing the company’s sales operations.
Now he stands accused of exploiting his position to obtain substantial illicit gains, the report said, citing information it got from public legal documents.
And while this case is still sub judice, our two cents is that this is something that will happen if a single company dominates the market as much as DJI does. You can easily imagine that DJI has so many orders in the pipeline that an employee can be tempted to sell access to the front of the queue; or any other preferential treatment.
Not that we think that is what this Yuan person did of course; but we just think the temptation would be great.
Which is why we also think this happened in China, where the government frowns upon issues to do with bribery and corruption and is known to act fast against these.
Yuan has been formally charged for the crime of "non-state functionary bribery," which involves individuals in the private sector using their official position to solicit or accept bribes.
The specific allegations state that Yuan leveraged his role, where he was comprehensively responsible for all sales operations, to obtain "huge improper benefits."
Despite the internal scandal, DJI which is now valued at a reported $121.8billion – has seen its commercial value soar still.
Founded in 2006, the company has grown to become synonymous with consumer and professional drones, commanding an estimated global market share exceeding 70 percent in the consumer drone segment.
Beyond its core business, DJI has successfully diversified into adjacent markets, most notably in action cameras, where it now poses a direct challenge to established players like GoPro.
